Abstract

We measured the electrical transport, thermal, and magnetic properties of antiferromagnetic (TN = 45 K) Gd2 InGe2. Magnetization along the c-axis at 0.5 K, using pulsed magnetic field up to 45 T, examined the possibility metamagnetic transitions. Magnetization measurements under applied magnetic field, oriented parallel and perpendicular to c-axis, and heat capacity data were used to extract the anisotropic magnetocaloric effect, using Maxwell’s relations. Our results point to a model of magnetic ordering where Gd local moments couple ferromagnetically perpendicular, and antiferromagnetically parallel to the c-axis. From the analysis of the electrical transport, heat capacity, and magnetization, conduction band electrons are weakly coupled to Gd f-electron local moments.
