Abstract

This chapter compare the success rate of abortions in both groups, to compare the induction- abortion interval in both groups and to study the side effects of the drugs.

Medication abortion, also known as medical abortion or abortion with pills, is a pregnancy termination protocol that involves taking two different drugs, Mifepristone and misoprostol, that can be safely used up to the first 70 days (10 weeks) of pregnancy according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

This study was conducted in department of obstetrics and gynecology, NIMS Medical College, Jaipur, during June 2017-August 2018. Thorough clinical examination was done, and proper history was also taken. Blood group and HB was done as routine investigation. Sonography was done only in cases suspected to be ectopic pregnancy.

The Mifepristone and Misoprostol combination regimen given for first trimester abortion was found to be highly successful complete abortion was achieved in 96% and 94% in group A and group B respectively. The difference between two groups was statistically not significant (p value =0.64). Failure rates were seen in only 4% of group A and 6% of group B. Pain abdomen was seen in 16% of group A and 38% of group B patients. The difference between both groups was statistically significant (p value=0.02). Nausea was seen in 10% of group A and 30% of group B patients. The difference between both groups is statistically significant (p value=0.018).

The problems associated with surgical abortion can be avoided if patients are given the correct counselling prior to having a medicinal abortion. However, we should communicate to the patient the possibility of retained foetal products and the risk of greater blood loss as gestational age increases.
