The emergence of bacterial species resistant to antibiotics has signaled the need for new substances that possess antimicrobial activity or act by enhancing the activity of existing drugs. In this scenario, essential oils are an important alternative. The present study aimed to characterize chemically and evaluate the antimicrobial activity of Croton blanchetianus essential oil. The essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed for antimicrobial activity against strains of Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Candida albicans (ATCC 10231), and a strain resistant to multiple antibiotics to Staphylococcus aureus SA-1199B by the microdilution method. GC-MS analysis identified 29 compounds (95.32%). The main constituents were -pinene (19.19%), caryophyllene (11.85%) and bicyclogermacrene (10.42%). The antimicrobial activity was observed on strains of Candida albicans at a concentration of 512 g mL-1 arising as a source of future research for the development of antimicrobial drugs in the treatment of infections caused by this opportunistic fungus.
