Background: Allografts in orthopaedics can be used in bone loss, multi ligament injuries, lack of native tissue. ACL reconstruction with a variety of autografts is very commonly performed using arthroscopy. In certain conditions, allografts can be preferred, if available, over autografts for the procedure considering the advantages associated with their usage.
We provide a comparison of outcomes of allograft usage among different studies with our study.
Methods: The study was conducted with patients who had isolated Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury and underwent Arthroscopic ACL reconstruction with allograft. The functional scoring was done at regular intervals during follow-up.
Results: At the final follow up, the patients had an Tegner score of 7.24 and IKDC score of 85.28. Knee flexion of >1200 was achieved in >80% of patients and no functional disability. Graft failures were not encountered.
Conclusion: Allografts are a good alternative to autografts in contrast to the popular belief. Soft tissue allografts have comparable clinical outcome, graft failure rate and complications to autografts. There are severaladvantages and they have their own limitations
