Background: Granulomatous Lobular Mastitis is a rather rare condition. This illness has similarities to malignancy and TB. Granulomatous inflammation with multinucleated giant cells and epithelioid histiocytes characterises this condition. Lobules are the focus of the inflammation. The goal of this study is to review the clinical and pathological characteristics of eight cases with granulomatous lobular mastitis, as well as to review relevant literature.
Methods: This is a prospective observational study. A total of eight patients were looked at. Investigations have been completed. For seven days, the patient was given Erythromycin 250 mg qid, Tinidazole 500 mg bid, and steroids for two months.Oral steroids were administered after the tumours were removed, sinuses were excised, and abscesses were emptied. A six-month follow-up was conducted.
Results: The patients were mostly multiparous and breastfeeding, and their ages ranged from 18 to 36.The lesion was diagnosed as malignant in three patients and benign in five others. The majority of the patients were on oral contraceptive tablets. Suppuration was identified in three cases, while sinuses were discovered in two others. A granulomatous inflammation centred on the lobules was discovered on histopathological investigation.
Conclusion: To avoid misunderstanding with malignancy, TB, fungal infection, sarcoidosis, mammary duct ectasia, cystic abnormalities in the breast with over palpation, and puerperal mastitis with over palpation, the diagnosis of granulomatous lobular mastitis should be established very carefully. Despite the fact that it is an uncommon disease, pathologists and surgeons must have a thorough grasp of it in order to improve its detection.
