Oils from Subabul, Ritha, Watermelon and Muskmelon seeds of Vidarbha region of Maharashtra State have been studied for physico-chemical characteristics and fatty acid composition of oils and their total phospholipids by Gas-liquid Chromatography (GLC).
The oil content in seeds was 9.8, 30.1, 43.4 and 41.4 percent. The oils had refractive index 1.4736,1.4634, 1.4723, 1.4651, acid value 3.8, 7.3, 4.8, 6.8, iodine value 116.8, 90.1, 1193, 120.8, saponification value 193.3, 188.7, 195.3, 199.9 and unsaponifiable matter 0.71, 0.88, 0.68 and 0.63 percent respectively.
The fatty acid composition of oils and their total phospholipids showed the predominant fatty acids to be palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids alongwith minor amounts of C20, C22 and unidentified fatty acids. Ritha oil contained the substantial amount of C20 acids.
